Matthew R. Smith Trio

Matthew R. Smith is a bassist, composer and educator from West Long Branch, New Jersey. He began his musical training. During this time, at 13 y/o he also began to play the electric bass and studied with bassist Buddy Savino, who introduced him to jazz. After graduating high school, his love of jazz grew and he began playing the double bass. He continued to study bass with Buddy Savino and theory with pianist Joe Accurso.

From there, he auditioned and was accepted into the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, where he earned his B.M. and M.M. in jazz performance. While in Philadelphia, he studied with many of the cities top musicians, composers and educators such as Dr. Donald Chittum, David Bennett Thomas, Don Glanden, Dr. Evan Solot, Dr. Norman David, Kevin MacConnell, Micah Jones, Steve Beskrone, Tony Micelli, John Swana, Chris Farr, Josh Lawrence, among others.

He performs professionally as a bandleader and freelancer with a variety of musicians and ensembles throughout the tristate area at venues ranging from restaurants and clubs, to festivals and concert halls. He is a composer of multiple styles and has three albums to his name. As a professional educator, he is a senior adjunct professor and teaches lessons, classes and ensembles at various schools throughout New Jersey.
