Saxophonist Nisarg Shah & His Quartet
Saxophonist Nisarg Shah & His Quartet
Nisarg Shah is a 21-year-old rising saxophonist, composer, educator, and bandleader born and raised in Long Island, NY. His grandfather was an Indian classical flautist and history teacher, and he was his first musical inspiration. He grew up around Indian music, which is ingrained in his musicianship today.
After he was first introduced to jazz in high school, his passion and work ethic allowed him to become one of the most promising young musicians in NY. In high school, his honor ensembles and awards included the NYSSMA All-County Jazz Ensemble, NY All-State Jazz Ensemble Alternate, Best Soloist Award at MADD’s Battle of Long Island High School Bands, and Nassau-Suffolk Jazz Ensemble.
He is currently on scholarship attending Temple University in Philadelphia, and is a member of Temple University Lab Band. His saxophone playing is embedded in the jazz tradition, with great influence from Sonny Rollins, John Coltrane, Joe Henderson, Dexter Gordon, Wayne Shorter, Cannonball Adderley, Charlie Parker, Coleman Hawkins, and Ben Webster. His rich tone and sonic intensity make his saxophone sound highly in demand.
Nisarg has had the honor of receiving mentorship from the likes of Dick Oatts, Tim Warfield Jr., Ted Nash Jr., and Jeff Lederer.
Nisarg consistently leads his own bands around the Philadelphia/NY area while also sharing the stage with luminaries such as Josh Lee & The Extended Family and legends like Mike Boone and Terell Stafford. His performances include Chris’s Jazz Café, DROM NYC, Tilles Jazz Festival, Smalls Jazz Club, NotSoLatin, The Jazz Loft, The National Jazz Festival, and more. The Nisarg Shah Quintet, featuring the most sought out rising talents in the jazz scene today, frequently performs innovative original compositions and arrangements.
He has also proven his expertise in woodwind doubling, playing in the pit orchestra for productions of “Chicago”, “You’re A Good Man Charlie Brown”, “The Little Shop of Horrors”, “Addams Family”, and“The Wedding Singer”.
Nisarg hopes to inspire people through the expression of his music while fostering the next generation to continue the jazz tradition.
